This is the story of The Black Company, a group of mercenaries in a medieval fantasy world full of magic and monsters. This book is described as the origin of Grimdark and military fantasy stories, and if so, I’m amazed this book could’ve launched those genres. I just couldn’t stand the writing. You are bombarded with names of people or places or things that are in no way explained; the action scenes are muddled; the dialog is awful; the characters feel like tropes; and the plot seems to meander from scene to scene with no logic or connection between them. I gave up ~20% of the way through.
