'Guards! Guards!' by Terry Pratchett
'Guards! Guards!' by Terry Pratchett

In the 8th book of the Discworld series, Captain Sam Vimes and his Night Watch team try to protect the city of Ankh-Morpork from a dragon. That said, the plot is really a setup to allow for a lovely parody of fantasy/medieval/dragon stories, that, in parts, felt like a Monty-Python take on fantasy stories and had me laughing out loud.

Although it’s the 8th book in the series, this was actually the first book I’ve ever read in the Discworld series. Overall, I’m impressed. To make a good parody, you have to have a deep understanding and appreciation of the genre you’re parodying, and it’s clear Pratchett both loves, and loves to laugh at, fantasy stories, and all the tropes within them (the knight who comes to save the day, the magical sword, the one-in-a-million odds, etc). I look forward to checking out more of this series in the future.
