'Rules of Prey' by John Sandford
'Rules of Prey' by John Sandford

Lucas Davenport is a detective. He kills bad guys, rather than arresting them. He makes and sells video games. Apparently, this makes him super wealthy, and he drives a Porsche. He sleeps with every woman he meets (including hitting on the victim of an attempted rape that he’s interviewing). In this book, he squares off against a serial killer. The serial killer is sleazy and gross. You know exactly who he is and have to read through painstaking detail as he murders and rapes women. If that description excites, you might like this book. If, like me, you find it gross and uninteresting, you probably won’t.

Honestly, I’m not sure why this book (and the whole Lucas Davenport series) is so well regarded. The character development is awful. Every woman is an idiot or a sex object. All the men are creepy. No one is “brilliant” or a “genius” as per the book description. The action scenes are boring. There’s no real detective work or mystery at all, as you know who the bad guy is from page 1. It’s just two creeps squaring off to see who comes out on top.

I don’t think I’ll be picking up the next book in this series.
