The 17th book in this series follows Detective Bosch as he works to solve another cold case. He’s joined by a brand-new partner, rookie Detective Lucia Soto, and the two of them work together to unwind a mystery that’s more than a decade old. Along the way, they run into the usual problems of politics, cover-ups, evil bosses, and internal affairs investigations.
If you’re this far into the Bosch series, you already know what to expect. Bosch is up to all his usual tricks: he gripes about new technology; he uses his numerous contacts to get things done quickly; he bends the rules when needed; he’s hated by politicians and administrators; ultimately, he gets the job done. The book doesn’t stray far from the standard formula, which works well-enough to produce another entertaining police procedural. On to book 18!
