Three books in, and this series is still very hit or miss (mostly miss). The characters and occasionally funny dialog make it just compelling enough to keep reading, but the rest is weaker: the action is lame; the magic is poorly defined and the plot relies heavily on deus ex machina; there’s a central mystery to drive the story forward, but the resolution is never particularly satisfying; all the women are sex objects and all the bad guys are boring, 2d tropes.
