'Fingersmith' by Sarah Waters

The story starts a bit slow and predictable, but then throws in a terrific twist, and gives you a whole new perspective on everything. But then it adds another twist and another and another, and kind of meanders off in a weird direction, wasting the great setup. Similarly, the characters start off promising—thieves, ladies, creepy uncles, scam artists—but none of them develop in interesting ways, so again, it feels wasted. It’s not a bad book, but ultimately not as good as it could’ve been.
