'The Shadow of What Was Lost' by James Islington

The good

  • Interesting characters.

  • Great world building.

  • Some good action scenes.

  • A number of mysteries to keep you reading.

The not so good

  • At times, there are a few too many mysteries tossed in all at once that you lose track of what you’re trying to resolve.

  • While most of the action scenes are decent, a lot of the story builds up to one major action scene that ultimately turns out to be quite disappointing.

  • While the magic system seems to have some rules and restrictions, it ultimately adapts to whatever the plot needs, and sometimes feels like deus ex machina.
