The good
-
Interesting setting: a southern town with a black sheriff. Plenty of social commentary that is handled reasonably well.
-
The characters feel like real people.
-
A dark mystery to keep the book moving.
-
Good writing and pacing.
The not so good
- The story is really dark: child rape, murder, torture. Those parts are not pleasant to read.
