The first half of the book was incredibly slow moving, almost as if deliberately trying to stretch things out. Moreover, you barely see Rand at all. It’s just enough of a grand adventure to keep you reading, but after the 25th time the characters enter yet another inn that is somewhat suspicious, and the 53rd dream sequence, I just found myself wishing the book would get on with it. Eventually, the various threads of the story start to come together, and things pick up pace, until a reasonably exciting conclusion, though I’m not sure it was enough of a pay-off given the length of the book.
