'Rivers of London' by Ben Aaronovitch
'Rivers of London' by Ben Aaronovitch

3.5 stars. Feels like a British version of the Harry Dresden books.

The good

  • An interesting world that mixes modern day police and detective work with wizards, ghosts, vampires, werewolves, and other magical things.

  • Occasionally amusing, dry, British humor, especially as the protagonist discovers this bizarre world of magic—and then proceeds to just take it all in stride.

The not so good

  • The plot is quite convoluted.

  • The magic is largely undefined and unrestrained, which I rarely find fun (too much deus ex machina ).
