'Storm Front' by Jim Butcher
'Storm Front' by Jim Butcher

The good

  • A fun mix: a detective/noir story meets a wizard/vampires/magic story.

  • Harry Dresden is a fun protagonist: part detective, part wizard, occasionally even funny.

  • The world is intriguing, featuring both cops and mafia, but also vampires and evil wizards.

The not so good

  • There are no clear rules or limits on the magic used in the book, so the solution to many scenes is a brand new bit of magic that someone pulls off just in time (deus ex machina).

  • Sometimes funny, but sometimes very cheesy.
