'Old Man's War' by John Scalzi
'Old Man's War' by John Scalzi
  • Fun premise: the Colonial Defense Forces (CDF) apparently has technology that can reverse aging, so as people get older, more and more of them choose to join the CDF. It’s a chance to be young again, but at the cost of having to join the military. As a result, the wars are being fought by old geezers in young bodies. The book makes great use of this premise.

  • The sci fi tech was fun: the way they reverse aging, the enhanced bodies, nanotechnology, the BrainPal, space elevators, skip drives, futuristic guns (MP-35), etc.

  • Good world building. The CDF is fascinating, as are the alien races we come across.

  • Good action, pacing, and a reasonably satisfying ending.

  • A decent sense of humor. The drill instructor and the way they name their BrainPals is especially fun.
