The good

  • Some interesting world building.

  • Good action, intrigue, and heist-like plotting.

  • A few intriguing characters.

The not so good

  • Seems to jump into the world in the middle and doesn’t explain a lot, so I found myself a bit confused.

  • Has a bunch of totally unexplained systems of magic, sorcery, and witchcraft. Sometimes, the characters can do seemingly random things when the story needs them, or, often for convoluted reasons, they can’t do those things at other times. Too much deus ex machina for my tastes.

  • The characters are intriguing, but feel slightly underdeveloped. Perhaps they develop more in the other books in the series.
