It’s book #5 in the series, so if you’re still reading by this point, you pretty much know what to expect: more zany outer space adventures; Skippy says all humans our dumb monkeys; Joe comes up with a crazy plan Skippy couldn’t conceive of; Skippy says he hates his life; Skippy and Joe survive and share some serious bromance; the rest of the crew shares some witty military banter; etc. It’s an entertaining formula that works, and Craig Alanson is sticking to it.
Due to the repetitive nature of the series, the jokes aren’t really funny anymore, or perhaps the jokes are just genuinely worse, whereas I actually laughed out loud a few times during the first book or two. However, the scope of problems in this one is getting larger, the mystery of the Elders is slowly being revealed a bit more, the characters are bonding more, and it ends up being a reasonably fun ride.
