'SpecOps' by Craig Alanson
'SpecOps' by Craig Alanson

I really enjoyed the first book in the series, but this second entry was a bit of a let-down. It did have a few genuinely laugh-out-loud moments, and a little bit of interesting Sci Fi battles, tactics, and strategy, but the vast majority of the book was:

  • Skippy: “all humans are dumb monkeys”
  • Joe: “I have an idea”
  • Skippy: “no way could dumb monkeys have a good idea”
  • Joe: “My idea is this: first, we’ll do A, B, …”
  • Skippy: interrupts Joe part way, “I already thought of that, and it won’t work, you dumb monkey”
  • Joe: “Actually, my idea was a bit different: we’ll do A, B, and then C.”
  • Skippy: (long pause)
  • Joe: “Skippy, are you still there?”
  • Skippy: “oh my god, I can’t believe I got outsmarted by a dumb monkey.”

Repeat that about 20x, and you have this book.
