'Outlander' by Diana Gabaldon

The good

  • Interesting premise.

  • The love story starts out cute / charming. I mean, it’s forced and weird, but the characters early on are at least slightly believable.

The not so good

  • Does nothing with the premise.

  • The love story goes over the top, quickly. What starts of as charming, quickly becomes a non-stop sex fest (borderline erotica), then a cheesy romance, then a bit of S&M, and then it just gets weirder from there.

  • There is a lot of rape and attempted rape in the story. I mean, a LOT. Like very few chapters. And it doesn’t seem to advance the story, at all. It’s just there, and quite disturbing, yet the story doesn’t seem to acknowledge it as such.

  • There’s also a lot of homophobia, pointless violence, over-the-top heroics / prince charming, and a bunch of other stuff that had me rolling my eyes.

  • Unnecessarily long. This could’ve easily been 1/3rd the length without losing anything of value.
