'The Trials' by Linda Nagata
'The Trials' by Linda Nagata

A good sequel to “The Red: First Light,” but it doesn’t quite hit the same high notes as the first book. The action sequences are just as intense, the sci fi setting with soldiers augmented by robotic exoskeletons, brain implants, and other fancy tech is just as fun, and you still have the same global conspiracy and political commentary. However, the pacing and structure of this book feels a bit off. The book alternates wildly between a slow walk and a full-on sprint; some of the action sequences feel like they are shoved in unnecessarily to break up a boring part of the book; the squad of soldiers never get a chance to develop much chemistry; and overall, the experience can be a little like a Skype call where the video repeatedly lags, freezes completely, then speeds up like crazy to catch up. All that said, it was still an entertaining, action-packed story, and I’m looking forward to the 3rd book in the series.
