'The Emperor's Blades' by Brian Staveley
'The Emperor's Blades' by Brian Staveley

The good

  • Great world building
  • Several interesting characters
  • Good pacing
  • Good action
  • Somewhat interesting mystery

The not so good

  • A few nonsensical uses of magic (the “Leeches”) purely to advance the plot in convenient ways.
  • The book is structured so all the heroes fail non-stop for the first 90% of the book and then become gloriously successful the last 10%.

Overall

An entertaining fantasy novel. I don’t see much depth to it, but it’s fun enough that I’m curious enough to read the next one.
