'The Emperor's Blades' by Brian Staveley

The good: great world building; several interesting characters; good pacing; good action; somewhat interesting mystery.

The bad: a few nonsensical uses of magic (the “Leeches”) purely to advance the plot in convenient ways; the book is structured so all the heroes fail non-stop for the first 90% of the book and then become gloriously successful the last 10%.

Overall: an entertaining fantasy novel. I don’t see much depth to it, but it’s fun enough that I’m curious enough to read the next one.
