'A Time to Die' by Tom Wood
'A Time to Die' by Tom Wood

The sixth entry in this series follows Victor as he tries to infiltrate the gang of a former Serbian military commander who is wanted for war crimes. Tom Wood clearly has a formula for these books, and this book follows the formula pretty closely:

  1. An exciting opening that throws you right into the action and lets you see Victor do something badass.
  2. Victor meets with his handler to get a new mission. The handler swears. Victor doesn’t like it.
  3. He doesn’t trust the people he works for, so he’s snarky, is reluctant to do the mission, and threatens to kill the handler.
  4. Victor eventually goes on the mission and meets his target and his cronies.
  5. The cronies don’t like Victor and try to take him out. It does not go well for them.
  6. Along the way, another badass assassin tries to take out Victor too. It does not go well for him.
  7. Also along the way, Victor meets a woman that he wants to protect. It does not go well for her.

I can’t really deny it: it’s an effective formula. Victor continues to be a fun character, and this book offers plenty of great action and competence porn. On to the next one!
