'Bloody Jack' by L.A. Meyer
'Bloody Jack' by L.A. Meyer

The story of Mary “Jack” Faber, a girl who sneaks aboard an 18th-century frigate as a ship’s boy. The book follows Jack’s adventures across the high seas, including fighting pirates, surviving on deserted islands, and, of course, hiding her identity the entire time.

It’s a young adult novel, but it’s well-written, charming, and entertaining for readers of any age. You get a few fun characters (especially Jack), a cute coming-of-age story, a bit of romance, a bit of action, and a bit of survival. What’s not to like?
