'The Soldier' by Neal Asher
'The Soldier' by Neal Asher

There are some really cool ideas in this book (the way different alien species evolve, the use of black holes, all sorts of advanced weaponry and armor), but I found the characters to be somewhat wooden and boring (you might even say… robotic), and the plot was confusing. I constantly felt like I was missing context, or the story skipped key details, or the action scenes were poorly described. The broad strokes of the story are clear enough, but I found it tough to follow the fine details and underlying mysteries. Perhaps you need to be an expert in all of Asher’s other books? FWIW, I’ve read quite a few of those as well, albeit across a number of years, so my memories of them are a bit hazy.
