The good
-
Once you realize what’s going on, it’s a powerful and emotional story that sticks with you for a while.
-
Telling the story from the perspective of a 5 year old was a unique choice, and not without drawbacks (as discussed below), but for the most part, made the whole thing more poignant.
-
The book seems to drag on a bit towards the end, but it does pay off with a satisfying conclusion.
The not so good
-
Once you realize what’s going on, you find that it is a disturbing subject matter, but by then, it’s too late to go back.
-
Telling the story from the perspective of a 5 year old is incredibly annoying when you first start reading. You get used to it, and it pays off, but I must admit I was very close to giving up just a few pages into it.
