One of Arthur C. Clarke’s laws is that “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Unfortunately, in this book, the technology is so advanced that it is hard to distinguish this book from a fantasy story around wizards and magic. The story makes little effort to describe what the rules are, what limits there are, if any laws of physics are being respected, etc… As a result, everything is fluid and squishy, and the solutions feel too much like deus ex machina.
