'Valkyrie' by Craig Alanson

The good

  • The first half progresses the plot nicely, with humanity trying to find a way to survive amidst more advanced alien species.

  • Near the very end, some major reveals about the larger plot line with the Elders. Finally!

  • The typical clever problem solving and exciting action you expect from the series.

  • The typical cheesy humor and banter between Joe and Skippy that you expect from the series.

The not so good

  • The typical adolescent, eye-rolling humor you expect from the series.

  • The typical “I can’t believe I was outsmarted by a dirty monkey” repetition you expect from the series.

  • Much of the second half focuses on a random subplot of trying to save a small group of humans. This felt like a jarring change to the pacing of the book; almost as if two books were glued together.
