The good
-
A book set in the universe of Sherlock Holmes. I love the Sherlock Holmes books, and it’s clear that Laurie R. King does too. Having the opportunity to see more of Holmes, Watson, and Mycroft is a treat.
-
Some decent deductions.
-
An interesting villain.
-
Occasionally, the relationship between Mary and Holmes can be touching.
The not so good
-
The deductions are nowhere near as impactful as the original source material. The way Conan Doyle has Holmes resolve crimes still stands head and shoulders above anything else I’ve read.
-
The relationships are still not as impactful as the original source material. The relationship between Holmes and Watson was more fun and endearing than that of Holmes and Mary. The former somehow felt more authentic; the latter seems more forced.
-
Mary is a little too good at… Well, at everything.
