I’ll be honest: I don’t understand why people like this book. At least not in 2023. Perhaps when the book came out ~200 years ago, it felt original, but by today’s standards it feels like a hackneyed love story, with a predictable ending, dated writing style, stilted dialog, and a slow, boring, linear narrative. Perhaps it’s unfair to judge a book from the past by today’s standards, but the reality is that I am reading the book today, and today, I didn’t particularly enjoy it.
