'Lord of Light' by Roger Zelazny
'Lord of Light' by Roger Zelazny

The good

  • A unique, interesting commentary on technology, religion, imperialism, and power.

The not so good

  • The book is written in the style of Hindu/Buddhist religious language, which was amusing briefly, but after endless repetition, it got very annoying.

  • The book jumps around a lot and can be confusing to follow. Again, this was amusing briefly, as you’d eventually realize what’s going on and have a fun “ohhh” moment, but after endless repetition, it got very annoying.

  • The technology here is poorly described and basically acts as magic. I suppose that’s fitting with the god theme, but it means none of the battles are fun to read, as they are just random mish mashes and deus ex machina.
