The good
-
Lovely, expansive new sci fi universe.
-
Some very cool new ideas or twists on old ideas, such as relifing and rejuve procedures, the impact those have on society and family, the impact of wormholes on society and warfare, using Dyson spheres for defense, the impact of gene editing on society, an interesting take on a very different alien species, and much more.
-
Lots of interesting, deep characters.
-
The overall plot is intriguing, with a number of mysteries to pull you along.
The not so good
-
Way too long. I’m talking nearly 1,200 pages, and it’s only book 1 of the series! And for such a long book, it still doesn’t resolve any of the major plot points by the end!
-
The book goes off on a few too many tangents. That’s part of the length issue.
-
There are too many characters. I’d often start a chapter, read some name, and have no idea who the book is taking about.
