'The Charm School' by Nelson DeMille
'The Charm School' by Nelson DeMille

The good

  • Intriguing central premise of what the “Charm School” is. I won’t explain that here to avoid spoilers, but it’s a fun and somewhat disturbing idea.

  • Some fun espionage and political intrigue in the Cold War era.

The not so good

  • Most of the characters feel like flat stereotypes rather than full, 3-dimensional human beings. The men are all super solders, super spies, super heroes, or super villains; the women are all beautiful and little more than trophies to sleep with and fight for.

  • Some of the speeches on Communism vs Democracy and the Soviet Union vs the USA are a bit silly.

  • The premise is interesting, but the plot doesn’t make great use of it.
