The Good
-
Excellent world building: we get a whole new universe where society is broken down into castes of different colors (the reds, the golds, etc), lots of cool technology, multiple worlds, and so on.
-
The book avoids the trope of two dimensional villains by putting the protagonist in a situation where he’s living with his greatest enemies, working with them, becoming friends with them, and even falling in love with them. That means that when he finally has to fight them, there is a lot at stake, and every character feels fully flushed out and important.
-
Lots of fun battles, strategy, and action. The book is not predictable, so when combined with the fact that every character matters, it is fairly gripping, and hard to put down.
The not so good
- It starts off pretty slow. But stick with it, it gets much better.
