'The Silence of the Lambs' by Thomas Harris
'The Silence of the Lambs' by Thomas Harris

The rare combination of excellent book and excellent movie. I’m honestly not sure which I like better.

I saw the movie first, years ago, and some of the imagery is still seared into my mind: Anthony Hopkins in the jail cell; Anthony Hopkins with the mask; Buffalo Bill in front of the mirror. The book tells the same dark story, and while obviously not as visual, it has the advantage of being able to go deeper into the psychology and crime solving.

It’s a fantastic, thrilling, and disturbing read. Highly recommended.

As always, I’ve saved a few of my favorite quotes:

“Problem-solving is hunting; it is savage pleasure and we are born to it.”

“Nothing happened to me, Officer Starling. I happened. You can’t reduce me to a set of influences.”

“I have no plans to call on you, Clarice, the world being more interesting with you in it.”
