'Next' by Michael Crichton

This book feels like a random collection of “what-if” stories that revolve around genetics. Some of the “what-ifs” are genuinely thought provoking (e.g., transgenic animals, the dangers of gene patenting, what happens when the legal system falls behind the rapid pace of scientific progress), but Crichton is not able to combine them into a coherent narrative. Moreover, most of the characters are unlikable, flat, and cartoony (the buff bounty hunter, the ruthless businessman, the soulless lawyer), and there is no one to root for until the very end of the story.
