'The Republic' by Plato
'The Republic' by Plato

The good

  • A few brilliant/famous parts.
  • The allegory of the cave, in particular, is terrific.
  • The basic concept of a Socratic Dialogue is fascinating: far easier to read and follow than the typical philosophical prose.

The not so good

  • It’s mostly just a guy eloquently agreeing with himself.
  • All the characters are flat and indistinguishable, used solely to further an argument. “Why yes of course Socrates; truly; certainly; if you ask me, it could be no other way”.
